Pronoun Reference Rules
Pronouns are words that stand in for a noun in a sentence. Whenever pronouns are used, it should be unmistakably clear which noun the pronoun is standing in for. A faulty pronoun reference will result in a muddled sentence and a confused reader.

Her is a pronoun representing the daughter in a simple construction that causes no confusion. Consider this more complex sentence, however:
The mother called the daughter back to clean up her mess.
Did the daughter forget to do her dishes? Was the mother a slob who thought her daughter should clean up after her? Which person does the pronoun her refer to? This faulty pronoun reference can be easily corrected:
When the daughter made a mess, the mother called her back to clean it up.
Even with two pronouns, the references in this sentence are clear. Here is another example of a faulty pronoun reference.
Separate Daniel and Alexander and then give him a detention for fighting.
Here it is unclear to whom the pronoun him refers. Who is to be punished for fighting? Using the original noun will clarify things for the reader.

Poor Daniel; he appears to be the guilty party in this encounter, but at least the sentence is clear.

ছাত্রছাত্রীরা আজ ্আমি আলোচনা করব HSC English 2nd Paper এর Grammar item থেকে Pronoun Reference নিয়ে। এই লেসনটি পড়ার পর তুমি নিজেই Unclear Pronoun Reference গুলো খুজে বের করে সেগুলোকে Clear Pronoun Reference দিয়ে শুদ্ধ করতে পারবে। তো শুরু করা যাক।
Pronoun কি (What is Pronoun?)
প্রিয় ছাত্রছাত্রী, তোমরা জান Pronoun কী? হয়তো জেনে থাকবে যে Noun এর পরিবর্তে যা ব্যবহার করি তাই হলো Pronoun. ঠিক তাই, যদি আমরা কোন নামজাতীয় শব্দ Noun বাক্যে প্রথমবার ব্যবহার করি, পরের বাক্যগুলোতে সেই নামটি বার বার ব্যবহার না করে তার পরিবর্তে একটি Pronoun ব্যবহার করি। এতে বাক্য অনেকটা শ্রুতিমধুর হয়।
যদি Pronoun সম্পর্কে ধারণা না থাকে, আমি বলব, তুমি আগে Parts of speech ও Case বিষয়ে আগে জেনে নাও। তবে Pronoun সম্পর্কে ভাল জ্ঞান লাভ করবে।
যেমন একটি উদাহরণ দেখতে পারঃ
Rana is 14 years old. Rana lives in a small village. Rana reads in class Eight. Rana’s father works in a bank and Rana’s mother is a house wife.

এখানে খেয়াল করে দেখ, প্রত্যেকটি বাক্যে Rana একটি নাম ব্যবহার করা হয়েছে। বারবার এই নাম ব্যবহার করা সুন্দর দেখায় না। তাই এই নামের পরিবর্তে যখন আমরা অন্য কোন শব্দ ব্যবহার করি সেটাই Pronoun. তো কি ব্যবহার করা যায় দেখ।
Rana is 14 years old. He lives in a small village. He reads in class Eight. His father works in a bank and His mother is a house wife.
এখানে Rana নামের পরিবর্তে আমরা সে বা He ব্যবহার করতে পারি।
এমনি কিছু Pronoun হলোঃ
Clear and Unclear Pronoun Reference
কোনো Sentence এ Pronoun টি যে Noun এর পরিবর্তে ব্যবহার করা হচ্ছে তা স্পষ্ঠ করা খুবই জরুরি। Pronoun এর Noun কে স্পষ্টভাবে নির্দেশ করার নিয়মই হচ্ছে Clear Pronoun Reference.
কিন্তু অনেক সময় দেখা যায় কোনো Sentence এ একাধিক Noun থাকলে Pronoun টি কোন Noun কে বোঝাচ্ছে তা বোঝা যায় না। নিচের Sentence টি লক্ষ্য করো,
I went to a shop to buy a packet of chips, but it didn’t open.
এখানে It (Pronoun) টি দ্বারা Shop কে বোঝানো হয়েছে নাকি Packet of Chips কে বোঝানো হয়েচে তা পরিস্কার নয়। দোকান খোলেনি নাকি চিপসের প্যাকেট খোলেনি তা পরিস্কারভাবে বুঝা যাচ্ছেনা। কোন Sentence এ এধরণের Pronoun এর অস্পষ্ঠতাকে বলা হয় Unclear Pronoun Reference.
Pronoun Reference এর নিয়মগুলো সম্পর্কে জানার আগে আসো দেখে নেই Number ও Person অনুযায়ী Pronoun এর ব্যবহার।
Rule 1 : Singular Noun এর সাথে Singular Pronoun ব্যবহার করতে হবে।
Incorrect: Everyone is trying their best to win the match
এখানে “their” Pronoun টির আগে বসা Noun টি হলো Everyone, যা একটি Singular word। তাই “their” এর পরিবর্তে “his/her” বসবে।

Rule 2 : দুটি Singular Noun যদি “and” দ্বারা যুক্ত থাকে, তখন তাদের পরিবর্তে Plural Pronoun ব্যবহার হয়|
Incorrect: Jaman & Kiron are very serious about his studies.
Correct: Jaman & Kiron are very serious about their studies.
Correct: Jaman & Kiron are very serious about their studies.
Rule 3: Pronoun সবসময় তার ঠিক আগের Noun টির Person অনুযায়ী বসবে।
Incorrect: If you want to make a good result, we must study hard.
Sentence টি Incorrect. কেননা Pronoun এর আগের Noun টি হলো 2nd person. তাই Pronoun হিসেবে “We” এর পরিবর্তে “You” বসবে।
Correct: If you want to maintain a good health, you must walk in the morning.
Rule 4: “Who” যখন Relative Pronoun হিসেবে ব্যবহার হয়, তখন সেটি কোন ব্যাক্তিকে নির্দেশ করে।
Incorrect: It is Mr. Kamal which works in a bank.
Correct: It is Mr. Kamal who works in a bank.
কিন্তু, “Which/ What/ That” শব্দগুলো যখন Relative Pronoun হিসেবে ব্যাবহার হয় তখন তা কোন বস্তু/প্রাণিকে নির্দেশ করে।
Incorrect: Doel is a beautiful bird who is also the national bird of Bangladesh.
Correct: Doel is a beautiful bird which/that is also the national bird of Bangladesh.
Incorrect: Doel is a beautiful bird who is also the national bird of Bangladesh.
Correct: Doel is a beautiful bird which/that is also the national bird of Bangladesh.
Rule 5: Singular noun এর পূর্বে যদি “Every/Each” শব্দগুলো থাকে তবে এদের পরিবর্তে Singular Pronoun বসবে।
Incorrect: Every Doctor & every Nurse should do their duty.
Correct: Every Doctor & every Nurse should do his duties.
Correct: Every Doctor & every Nurse should do his duties.
Rule 6: দুটি Singular Noun যদি Either….or বা Neither …nor বা or দ্বারা যুক্ত থাকে তবে এদের পরিবর্তে Singular Noun ব্যবহার হবে ।
Incorrect: Either Rina or Mina will complete their work
Correct: Either Rina or Mina will complete her work
Correct: Either Rina or Mina will complete her work
কিন্তু, একটি Singular Noun ও একটি Plural যদি nor বা or দ্বারা যুক্ত থাকে তবে এদের পরিবর্তে Plural Noun ব্যবহার হবে ।
Incorrect: Either the teachers or the Headmaster has succeeded in his attempt.
Correct: Either the teachers or the Headmaster have succeeded in their attempt.
Correct: Either the teachers or the Headmaster have succeeded in their attempt.
Rule 7: (Pronoun Order) যখন বিভিন্ন Person যেমন 1st, 2nd, 3rd Person একসাথে কোন কাজ করে, Pronoun গুলো লিখার ক্ষেত্রে (231) নিয়মটি অনুসরণ করতে হবে। অর্থাৎ, প্রথমে 3rd Person, তারপর 2nd Person এরপর 1st Person হবে।
Incorrect: I, you and he are friends
Correct: You, he and I are friends
Correct: You, he and I are friends
কিন্তু দোষ স্বীকার করার ক্ষেত্রে, (123) নিয়মটি অনুসরণ করতে হবে। অর্থাৎ, প্রথমে 1st Person, তারপর 2nd Person এরপর 3rd Person হবে।
Incorrect: He, you and I made the mistake
Correct: I, you and he made the mistake.
Correct: I, you and he made the mistake.
Rule 8: Collective Noun যদি একসাথে কাজ করছে বোঝায় তবে Singular Pronun ব্যবহার হয়।
The jury has decided its judgement.
এখানে, Jury এর সবাই একত্রে সিদ্ধান্ত নিয়েছে। তাই Single Pronoun ব্যবহার হয়েছে।
কিন্তু, Collective Noun যদি একত্রে কাজ করছেনা বা তাদের মধ্যে বিভক্তি বোঝা যায়, তবে অবশ্যই Plural Noun ব্যবহার হবে।
The jury were divided in their opinion.
এখানে, Jury এর সবাই আলাদা আলাদা সিদ্ধান্তে ভাগ হয়ে গিয়েছে, তাই Plural Pronoun ব্যবহার করা হয়েছে।
বন্ধুরা, তোমাদের HSC পরীক্ষায় এইরকম Prononu নিয়ে একটি পুরো Passage থাকে যেখানে কয়েকটি Unclear Pronoun reference থাকে। তোমাদের কাজ হলো সেই Unclear Pronoun reference খুজে বের করে সঠিক Pronoun ব্যাবহার করা।
